Stage One: The Story Often Comes Before the Script

Somebody has already decided which story is worth the bet before anyone yells “action” on a short drama set. Follow a few hits backward and you often discover a book at the start of the chain. Breaking the Ice, ReelShort’s 2024 hockey romance centered www.reelshorts.org on a secret child, is based on the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. On November 1, 2025, ReelShort premiered Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series drawn from a novel by Cora Reilly. The Korean office romance Quiet in the Office!, released in 2026 and carrying a 19+ age rating, is adapted from a web novel and webtoon. Source material sits close at hand since a number of app owners also operate reading businesses: Crazy Maple Studio makes the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater runs the books app My Passion, and GoodNovel is GoodShort’s Google Play developer name. Without a book, writers fall back on tested tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. Every scene has to deliver a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds, so the script’s job is to squeeze a long drama story into such scenes.

Stage Two: Familiar Faces in the Cast

Casting is where the format’s economics show up on screen. If you look through the cast lists for short series on IMDb, the same names keep showing up. Noah Fearnley headlined ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and was back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance tale about a former football star. On GoodShort, Rosa Singerman fronted both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia in 2025, the second opposite Franky Cammarata. When a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over, it matters a great deal that a lead with a following on one app arrives at the next title with a head start. DramaBox operates a production team in Los Angeles. Studios are also casting with a particular viewer in mind, since TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Filmed in About Eight Days

A Western short drama typically costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is shot in eight to ten days, according to TheWrap. The picture is similar in Wikipedia’s overview of the format, where a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes is pegged at $150,000 to $250,000. Close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day: that is what a 70-episode series shot in eight days comes to, by simple arithmetic. Chinese producers selling abroad have reported slimmer numbers still, with Jiuzhou Culture putting a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Per finished episode, that comes to roughly $1,400 to $2,100. Jiuzhou also reported that 20 percent of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets were original overseas productions, while about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations. The costly shoot happens only once, since dubbing lets a studio reuse a finished domestic series.

Stage Four: Cutting Episodes to 60–100 Seconds

Editors chop the footage into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing suite, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. There is room for a turn or two of plot at that length, so each one is built around a question which the next episode promises to answer. The cliffhanger is the house style, serving as the mechanism that moves you from one installment to the next. A 70-episode series totals roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time once those segments are put together. On GoodShort’s official pages, My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen is listed with 30 episodes and The Dragon King’s Return is listed with 100 episodes; episode counts differ widely by title. Viewers who never open the app can still see the same footage, since ReelShort also maintains official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. In short, editors are cutting video dramas for several screens at once.

Stage Five: Placing the Paywall

The last creative decision is also a commercial one. Free access covers the first eight to ten episodes in the standard model TheWrap lays out. In 2024 TheWrap counted the first eight episodes as free, whereas ReelShort’s own blog places its free run at usually five to 15 episodes. Episodes after that are unlocked with coins, with the standard cost of an episode given as about 60 coins in ReelShort’s blog. You can also earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog, or buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically. Your store may show something different, since prices differ by country, platform and promotion. The controversial part is placement: paywalls dropping right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, together with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Any coin generator or modded “unlimited coins” app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and best left alone.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Generated Series

At the latest production stage, the camera drops out entirely. Animated motion comics now sit alongside ReelShort’s live-action catalogue. A 58-episode family saga, The Lost Heir centers on Arthur Lancaster, who loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and eventually unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. A separate 58-episode ShortMax series has the same title, and the two should not be confused. DramaWave has gone furthest, with more than 80 percent of its newly released content AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which also reported that the app’s annualized revenue exceeded $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 that AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, before critics widely branded it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Line

Established studios have noticed; Fox Entertainment provides the plainest example. Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, took on an equity investment from Fox in October 2025. Fox-produced series already on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside, and Fox has also committed to producing more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Holywater raised a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. When a network-scale producer commits to that volume, it suggests the eight-day shoot has moved from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line at a Quick Glance

Place the stages side by side and the logic of the business comes into focus. Much of the rest is arranged around the shoot, which is the expensive, fixed block. The edit is engineered around cliffhangers that feed a paywall, casting leans on familiar faces, and scripts usually arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes. Fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, but TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The typical time and cost at each stage are laid out in the table below, which uses only publicly reported figures. Where no reliable number has been published, it states as much rather than guessing.
